UN Chief Condemns Houthi Detention of UN Staff in Yemen

(MENAFN) The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has issued a strong denunciation of the recent arbitrary arrests of additional UN workers by the Houthi movement in Yemen, according to a statement released Monday by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

Dujarric revealed that nine more UN personnel were recently taken into custody by the Houthis, raising the overall count of UN staff detained without justification to 53 since 2021.

“These actions hinder the UN’s ability to operate in Yemen and to deliver critical assistance.

The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the safety and security of United Nations personnel in Yemen,” Dujarric stated.

These developments, he emphasized, are seriously disrupting the organization's humanitarian mission in the conflict-affected country.

Guterres once again made his "urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release" of all individuals affiliated with the UN, along with staff from non-governmental organizations, civil society institutions, and diplomatic missions.

“They must be respected and protected in accordance with applicable international law,” Dujarric stressed, underscoring the legal obligations surrounding the treatment of humanitarian and diplomatic personnel.

Reaffirming his stance, Guterres emphasized that UN staff must be permitted to carry out their duties "without hindrance."

Furthermore, Dujarric highlighted that the facilities and resources of the organization are “inviolable and must be protected at all times.”
